On April 21-22,
2012, the Fairchild Tropical Botanic Garden [FTBG] hosted the 32nd
annual bromeliad show sponsored by the Bromeliad Society of South
Florida [BSSF]. This is a Zone 10 extravaganza. Outside of Hawaii or
California, South Florida has the greatest number of nurserymen which
propagate, hybridize, grow, and wholesale bromeliads to the rest of the
continental United States –
as well as
other continents of this large world. Many of those nurseries sold their plants at the
show.
It is anticipated
that no less than nine nurseries will be at the show and as many as
thirteen could be there. Each and every one of these nurseries grow
different and unique plants. No two vendors will
sell the same type of
plants.
The show also featured
the annual competition which were judged on April 20, 2012. Any and
all visitors have free access to look at these
award-winning plants held in the auditorium. Included
was an annual
display given by many of the local nurserymen which show their unique
plants which can never be found in another person’s yard or nursery.
Bargain basement
prices came to you from the vendors. If you wanted lots of plants for
a cheap price, the members’ booth delivered rare
species (many of which are only known by the mature
or educated eye) at unbelievable prices. On both days, at 12:30 PM, there
was an auction of extremely unique
plants – where prices were be better than you could ever have
realized.
If looking at the plants
for sale, participating in a rare plant auction, or viewing items at the
judged competition are not enough, remember that FTBG continues to had
artwork on display throughout the garden. Any and all persons attending
the BSSF April show will be entitled to walk throughout the FTBG gardens
and be dazzled by the magnificent arts at the unparalleled FTBG.
